News Updates: June 6, 2010

June’s Scenario Sunday was a smashing success yet again. A total of 36 more waivers were signed today, bringing our total so far for the year to 300. Thank you for sharing this colder, slippery Sunday with us!  Keeping up the break-up of the 110er list, we honored: Mike Webber, Nate, Joe, Stephanie, Easterday and Bruce. Thank you all for everything you do to keep Splatmandu running smoothly. It is appreciated more than you realize.

For the third installment of the War Games Scenario, we ran “Battlefield” OPERATION! Blue (Roughnecks) had 51 players, and Gray (Last Chancers) had 49. After Ted gave the Splatmandu Safety briefing, both Captains rolled their die to determine which side of the Neutral Zone they would exit for the single re-insertion. Captain Scotty of the Gray Team had the highest roll (yet again!) and selected the North side of the Neutral Zone (the supply pile side), which left Captain Jason of the Blue team with the South side, nearest Rod’s corner. Since everything behind the Neutral Zone starting locations was out-of-bounds, this cut down the fields significantly. Ted’s Reds Specialty Characters (12 of them) were released onto the field of play and the Game rules were left for game-designer Nate to explain.

The 90 minute max time, winner-take-all game kicked off at 2:00pm and battles quickly erupted across the Hornet’s Nest. Off the break, the Gray team quickly secured 90% of the in-bounds territory, taking the Hornet’s Nest, Mine Field, Smuggler’s Den and the area surrounding the objective inside the Alamo.

The Ted’s Reds were roaming about the fields - four of which were carrying the missing Operation Part Cards needed to complete the Operation successfully. The Gray team was able to get both their Part Cards from the Reds.

The members of the Top Five from each team were the “Surgeons” - each taking turns in order of the roster they submitted prior to game start. Armed with only a Part Card and a Surgeon mask, these brave soldiers battled their way to the East side of the Alamo, to take a crack at the Operation board. Captain Scotty B. was first inside the Alamo and was unsuccessful on his first attempt, but Dando was quick to recover, who was next in line. The Gray team managed to remove 10 of the 13 parts from the Operation Board by the conclusion of the 90 minute game.  Due to some unfortunate table bumping on the Gray board, the “Ringing in the Ear” and “Runny Nose” parts were next to impossible to remove as they lodged themselves in the edges of the game board slot. Also, “Dog Tired”  - a card captured from the Red’s - which was never removed successfully. This game is harder than you remember it being as kids huh guys?

Unfortunately for Blue, the initial push for territory was deterred by the Gray team and they spent the remainder of the time pushing the Mine Field and the Hornet’s Nest to gain access to the Alamo. Several of the Blue Top Five Surgeons were able to touch the Alamo, but none were successful in entering the building to try a “surgery” - but not for lack of trying! Many hard-fought attempts were made by the Blue team up the backside of the Mine Field.  These attempts would not overcome the Gray team who won the day.

For those of you who like stats, (and who doesn’t?) here is the attempt/completion list per team:

Gray Team Roster

Scotty B., Dando and Chad - 3 attempts, 2 completions, Eric and Justin - two attempts, two completions.

Blue Team Roster

Jason and David -  2 attempts, 0 completions, Rendell, Shawn and Jerry -  1 attempt, 0 completions.

Totals through June:

Gray (Last Chancers) - 2

Blue (Roughnecks) - 1

We had a few reports of hot-headed foul language, as well as reports from both teams regarding what we like to call “bonus balls” - meaning after a player is eliminated and walking from the field, they are shot again. This behavior will not be tolerated. Those involved were talked to, so hopefully this issue will be a mute point for the rest of the season. We take safety and respect for our fellow players seriously, so please don’t make this mistake again! We know Paintball can be an intense game, but if you can’t keep your cool on the field, please take a breather in the Neutral Zone until you can compose yourself. This is family-oriented paintball, and we want to keep the game PURE and fun for everyone, regardless of age or skill level.

Thank you again to everyone who played their hearts out for your teams. Both captains were proud of the level of enthusiasm put forth. We thank you all again for all you do for our Club, and the food drive donations were wonderful today! Thank you so much and keep up the good work! See you next weekend!

Reminder: July’s Scenario Sunday will be ONE BALL - so don’t bother packing your hopper … and yes, we ARE running the scenario even though it falls on July 4th.
